Golaghat district commissioner Biswajit Pukan inspected the proposed site for India's first underwater road-cum-rail tunnel beneath the Brahmaputra river. The tunnel will connect Gohpur and Numaligarh, significantly reducing travel time and distance. National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) is overseeing the project, which received Union Cabinet approval in February 2026 with an estimated cost of Rs 18,662 crore. This ambitious project aims to integrate major national highways and railway sections, potentially generating substantial employment.
