Bhutan GLOF Creates New Lake, Raising Fears of Secondary Hazards

Times of India · environment

A glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) in Bhutan has caused a flood alert in Assam and West Bengal, and formed a new temporary lake downstream. The outburst originated from Shintaphu glacial lake, which contained an estimated six million cubic metres of water. Experts warn that such temporary lakes can pose secondary flood hazards if not monitored, as they can form from debris blocking river channels. Fortunately, an early-warning system was activated, preventing any loss of life and allowing residents to take precautions.
