Punjab Govt Defends CBI Probe Referral in Jhota Murder Case

Punjab's finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema stated the decision to transfer the murder investigation of anti-drug activist Parminder Singh Jhota to the CBI was an administrative one. This comes as the state government is challenging a court order that handed a corruption probe involving Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's OSD to the CBI. Cheema clarified that referring the activist's killing to the central agency does not revive the CBI's general jurisdiction in Punjab. The state government had previously revoked the CBI's blanket consent to operate within Punjab, requiring case-by-case permission.

पंजाब के वित्त मंत्री हरपाल सिंह चीमा ने कहा कि नशीली दवाओं विरोधी कार्यकर्ता परमजीत सिंह झोटा की हत्या की जांच सीबीआई को सौंपने का फैसला एक प्रशासनिक निर्णय था। यह तब हुआ है जब राज्य सरकार मुख्यमंत्री भगवंत मान के ओएसडी से जुड़े भ्रष्टाचार की जांच सीबीआई को सौंपने वाले अदालत के आदेश को चुनौती दे रही है। चीमा ने स्पष्ट किया कि कार्यकर्ता की हत्या का मामला केंद्रीय एजेंसी को सौंपने से पंजाब में सीबीआई का सामान्य अधिकार क्षेत्र बहाल नहीं होता है। राज्य सरकार ने पहले पंजाब में काम करने के लिए सीबीआई की सामान्य सहमति रद्द कर दी थी, जिसके लिए मामले-दर-मामले अनुमति की आवश्यकता होती है।
