Sudanese Artists Rebuild Lives and Culture Amidst War's Devastation
Al Jazeera · world
Sudanese visual artist and theatre director Awad Haroun fled his Khartoum home after war destroyed his life and workspace, relocating to Port Sudan with his family. He lost his home, tools, and materials but continues to create art and lead workshops, participating in festivals organised by Ahalina Cultural Group and UNESCO. Despite facing potential eviction from temporary shelter, Haroun believes art preserves memories and unites communities. The war has severely impacted Sudan's cultural sector, with significant funding gaps and artists displaced or killed, yet cultural initiatives persist.
