Supreme Court Asks Govt to Cap Prices of Non-Patented Medicines
Times of India · health
The Supreme Court has questioned the government's rationale for not controlling the prices of all non-patented medicines and medical consumables, beyond anti-cancer drugs. Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta highlighted exorbitant markups on common items like cardiac stents and drip lines, with retailer prices significantly lower than maximum retail prices. The court noted profit margins can reach up to 1,000% for some consumables. While the government cited potential impacts on rural availability and market competitiveness, the court emphasized that justifications did not favour patients paying higher prices.
