Kerala Govt Permits Sand Mining in 17 Rivers, Environmentalists Raise Concerns

The Hindu · india

Environmental activists in Kerala are protesting the state government's decision to permit the extraction of 1.7 crore tonnes of sand from 17 rivers. The Society for the Protection of the Environment, Kerala (SPEK) argues that no environmental impact assessment was conducted for this move, which is being presented as a flood mitigation strategy. Activists fear this could lead to indiscriminate sand extraction from all rivers and streams. They emphasize that sand is crucial for river ecosystems, flood control, groundwater recharge, and supporting agriculture and fisheries.
