Rare Himalayan Mad Honey Contains Hallucinogenic Compounds
Times of India · health
A rare variety of honey, known as Mad honey, is produced by the world's largest honeybee, Apis laboriosa, in Nepal's remote mountain regions. These bees feed on rhododendron nectar, which contains grayanotoxins that can cause hallucinations and affect the nervous system. The honey is harvested by the Gurung tribe using traditional methods, dangling from cliffs without safety equipment. Due to its unique properties and difficult harvesting, Mad honey is expensive, selling for up to Rs 10,000 per kilogram.
