Hidden Bamboo Coral Forest Discovered Nearly 1,400 Metres Below South China Sea Surface
Times of India · science
Scientists have discovered a deep-water bamboo coral forest near the Xisha Islands in the South China Sea, at depths between 1,200 and 1,380 metres. The forest, found during a May 2018 expedition using the submersible ‘ShenhaiYongshi’, features tall, whip-shaped coral colonies alongside sea fans and sponges. This marks the first observation of such deep-water bamboo coral forests in Southeast Asia. The findings offer new avenues for studying these unique ecosystems and their conservation needs.
