Actor Billy Gardell revealed that bariatric surgery in 2021 likely saved his life after being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and other health issues. He explained that while he managed his weight for years due to genetics and past sports activity, his health problems eventually caught up. Gardell's doctor advised him that "after 50 the warranties start running out." Following knee surgery that limited his mobility, he opted for the procedure. He is now free of diabetes and medication, though he must be selective about his food intake.
