The Indian government has advised Meta, owner of Facebook and Instagram, to review its content recommendation systems. The advisory urges Meta to prevent users from being disproportionately exposed to limited narratives and to strengthen checks on content that could incite public disorder or violence. It specifically asks for adequate context for visuals depicting public events, especially when authenticity or location is unclear. The ministry also flagged concerns about algorithmic bias and the amplification of misleading or out-of-context material, particularly old or edited visuals presented as current.
